Read Time:1 Minute, 55 Second

I had a great vacation and I really did make use of the time to relax and enjoy myself. Now that I’m back from vacation, I’m spending at least an hour working on my WIP every night after work. Well, ok not Tuesday night because it was my first day of work after a two-week break and I was dead tired.

I have written over 1,000 words each night (surpassing my 714 daily word goal) and its good because it makes up for my ZERO words written last week. I feel like I’m going up the winding road to get to the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain being the ROW80 deadline.

Transfagarasan - road through the Fagaras Mountains, Romania

I checked my overall word count for my WIP, which I don’t do often, and I’ve made it past the 30,000 words point. I read somewhere that this is usually the spot when writers start to get bored and even blocked with their WIP. I’m happy to report that I don’t think this is the case for me. I have the next two chapters planned out already and then I will start working on my detailed plotting for the next chapters. I have a very rough overview of the whole book pasted in bits in a Word Document, but I make detailed chapter outlines a few chapters ahead of where I’m at. I’m not sure if this is the best strategy, but I find that I can’t be too detailed too far in advance because I’m not 100% sure what’s going to happen yet and haven’t thought that far ahead.

Now I just have to get my blog posts organized. I’ve definitely been falling behind on that front. I need to go through the 2,000+ photos from the Romanian vacation (sneak peak photo included above) and I need to start reading more craft books to report on for Writers’ Uni-Verse-City Wednesdays.

If any of you ROW80ers would like to write a guest post on writing for any upcoming Wednesdays just drop me an email at: annotationseditorial@gmail.com

How’s it going for everyone else? Are you slowing climbing the mountain or did you make a pit stop?

  1. Vacation? What’s that? Ha! I’m glad you took a break and are now back to writing. As far as the outlining goes, I’ve been reading/hearing that there is no RIGHT way so whatever works for you keep doing it. I look forward to the photos as well. Keep up the great work.

  2. Beautiful photo. This week I think I have been sprinting up parts of the hill writing wise but on my exercise goal I seemed to have found a good spot along the route to lie in the sun and eat ice cream!
Great to hear you are back into the swing of things with your WIP and over 30,000 words is great.

    Have a brilliant week 8!

    1. Thanks Em. I tried to leave a comment on your blog but for some reason I don’t think Blogger likes me…or maybe it doesn’t like WordPress. Let me know if you got the comment.

P.S. Love lying in the sun and eating ice cream. Its in the top 5 of my all time favorite things to do. 🙂

  3. Fantastic picture–you make me hungry for more! Sometimes we have to take a break to recharge the batteries. You’re still making great progress, Nicole!

I’m still slogging up the hill myself, much like a tortoise! Have a great week.

    1. Thanks Nancy. More photos are a coming. Tortoises are slow and steady, and they usually win the race. I was like a hare before vacation, now I’m thinking I will go tortoise-style.

  4. went to rumania once long ago prob. in the 60s lovely place prob. changed a bit since then but mountains usually stay splendid – I maybe dropping you a line about guest posting as I’ still looking for guest blogs for my book tour end of September – hope next week is good for you

    1. Hi Alberta,

Yes, Romania probably has changed a lot since the 60s, especially the major cities, But you’re right, I’m sure the nature is as ever beautiful.

And yes, please email about a guest post. Book tour sounds great!

  5. Thank you for trying to comment but it isn’t up there yet! May be is it delayed?! Sometimes I struggle to comment on others and it won’t let me. Very frustrating! But thanks anyway!

  6. Great job on the goals, Nicole, you’re doing fantastic! Can’t wait to see the rest of your vacation pics, the one of the mountains is awe inspiring. Your plotting method sounds fine to me, as long as you know what your keep points (milestones as Larry Brooks calls them) are. As long as it is working for you, I wouldn’t worry about it.

    Have a great week!

  7. You’re on fire this week! The plotting and steady progress is beautfiul. Thanks for sharing the mountain photo. That’s nice, too.

I’ve spent the summer working through final revisions, plotting my next book, and writing a rough draft of that synopsis. I’m excited to report I’m on the final two chapters for revisions–on schedule to send out to agents at the end of August.

Keep up the great effort! 🙂

  8. Thanks so much for the comment Jolyse. You sound like you’ve had a very nice summer in terms of writing/revising/plotting. I wish I was at your stage. How do you choose agents to submit to?

  9. Happy to hear that you’ve enjoyed your vacation! Taking some time out to rest and recharge is essential. I’m also looking forward to seeing more pictures from the trip!

I’m trying to move forward with my work, and avoid the trap of editing/rewriting too early. The WIP is coming along, and I’m trying to do a bit of plotting and outlining for the final third of the book to make things a little easier.

    Enjoy your week!

    1. I haven’t even tried to edit/rewrite yet…well there was this one time at the beginning of draft 1 where I had to cut and rewrite, but thankfully I haven’t been required to do so yet.

  10. Oh, Nicole, I LOVE the pic! Can’t wait to see more…

Congrats on your words this week and on breaking the 30K mark! That was higher than my entire ROW80 goal so I’m hugely impressed. You GO, girl!!

    1. My only problem is I don’t remember where I started when I began ROW80. I think I had about 3,000 words already written before ROW80…I have 20,000ish more words to go. Seems like to high of a mountain to climb until the deadline.

  11. I hate to sound like a neophile, but what’s the buzz about ROW80? I’ve read a few bloggers’ posts and people seem to love it. I don’t get writing on a deadline. Can you explain it to me? Is it for people who have trouble sitting down and writing every day or is there some other goal?

Thanks, Nicole! Love your travel pics!

    1. I didn’t know about ROW80 until a few months ago. Basically is a community of writers who “start” writing on a certain day and make certain goals to reach by the end. I don’t really think its “writing on a deadline” because you can always change your goals along the way.

I joined ROW80 because I thought that it would be a good motivator to be publicly accountable for my personal writing goals. Having a full-time job and other responsibilities, it made it easier for me to look at this community of writers and talking with them makes it more fun and I’ve learned a lot from reading other writer’s blogs.

Hope this was a good explanation. If not, the website is here: http://aroundofwordsin80days.wordpress.com/about/
