Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern adheres to her usual style with elements of magic and love in the story, but what really made this book stand out for me was the humor and the twist near the end.

Synopsis:

How can you know someone you’ve never met?

Joyce Conway remembers things she shouldn’t. She knows about tiny cobbled streets in Paris, which she has never visited. And every night she dreams about an unknown little girl with blonde hair.

Justin Hitchcock is divorced, lonely and restless. He arrives in Dublin to give a lecture on art and is persuaded to donate blood. It’s the first thing to come straight from his heart in a long time.

When Joyce leaves hospital after a terrible accident, with her life and her marriage in pieces, she moves back in with her elderly father. All the while a strong sense of déjà vu is overwhelming her and she can’t figure out why…

Ahern surprised me in this book with the hilarious dialogue, the wonderful characters, my favorite being Joyce’s father who’s entertaining in every way; the things he does and says.

I enjoyed the journey that both Justin and Joyce take throughout this book, they each have some issues that they work on while they try to figure out this mysterious connection they have for each other when they’ve never properly met.

The story is romantic, but in a edge-of-your seat kind of way. Its not too “mushy” or over the top and Ahern keeps your attention throughout. This book is one I would describe as hard to put down. A real page-turner with twists and turns along the way.

Nearing the end of the book, I thought that I had predicted the ending, but Ahern threw in a great twist that made me appreciate the story so much more. It might be a book that I read again and I don’t often want to do that since there are so many great books I have yet to read.

What book do you remember that had a great twist or a surprising (yet fulfilling) ending?

  1. Great review, Nicole. Sounds like a book for the TBR pile. 🙂 I’ll have to think about what story I’ve read recently whose ending surprised me. It’s been a while since I haven’t been able to make a successful predicition. Hmm, now I have to read THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. It’ll be a challenge to see if I can outwit the author. LOL

  2. I’ve read PS I Love You by Ahern and enjoyed it thoroughly, but when I read The Book Of Tomorrow I found it kind of… lame I guess would be the fitting word. Do you think I should give this one a try?

    1. I would say you should definitely give this one a try. I’ve reviewed some of her other books (you can find them through my Book Reviews page) and haven’t been completely impressed, but this one is a game changer. I’ve seen interviews with Ahern and she mentions that THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES is similar to P.S. I LOVE YOU and she was told so by her fans. So I think its a safe bet that’ll enjoy it.

  3. I’ve read this book too and I loved it. Ahern does have a twist in all her books and that is great, I look up to people that can make your mind twist and bend.

    1. It really makes me want to write a twist in one of my books…maybe somewhere down the line I can think of one. They are so intriguing and make you so much more excited to read the ending. Thanks for the comment Rose.

  4. I have read this book but can’t remember it, I seem to have a brain gap! Will have to look it out again and give it another read. Great review and glad you enjoyed the book. PS I love you is still my favourite!!!

  5. ‘thanks for the memories’ is a wonderful book..and did carry me into an unknown world full of amazing adventures..! seriously, its so fantastic that i read it on one seating.i would say all the books i have read of Ahern so far, including ‘the gift’ and ‘the book of tommorow’ is even pretty good and all of you should give it a try! 🙂
