You know when you read a book and then realize after you finish it that it is the first book in a series? Well, that’s what happened to me with Single in the City by Michele Gorman.
Synopsis:
It’s official. Hannah has left her friends and family in the US behind and is following her dream. To live in London. Unfortunately she’s completely unprepared for what’s in store.
She’s going to find:
1. Her dream guy. A prince or Hugh Grant would be nice. Or does she have to settle for her half-naked Australian housemate or an “English gentleman” with terrible hygiene habits?
2. Her dream job. Something fantastic in fashion. So how has she ended up being the mini-me for an evil party planner who doesn’t even trust her to arrange the paperclips.
3. Her dream friends. But everyone in London seems to have known each other for years and Hannah’s having trouble getting to know nice people. Who’s she going to have fun with?
Dream life? Should Hannah just dream on? Maybe it would have been simpler and cheaper to just get a new haircut. Was she mad to move 3,000 miles away from everyone she knows? Will she ever find love and her perfect life in England?
See nowhere does it say “book 1 in _____ series”. So imagine my shock when I all of a sudden get to the end of the book and flip the page on the e-reader and find….nothing more! I flipped back and forth a few times and said “what?” out loud.
Then someone smart said “maybe its a series?” Well, yeah it is a series and I wish I would have known. I probably still would have read the book anyways, but at least I would have expected this type of ending.
So about the book. It follows the dating and work life of Hannah with no last name. An American expat in London finds out that there are more differences between American and British culture besides the accent. It was fun to read about Hannah trying to get a job, make new friends, and find the right guy.
I’m no expert on women’s fiction and chick lit, but based on what I’ve read, I think this book would be considered Classic Chick Lit. The main character’s main struggles (i.e. finding an apartment, job and boyfriend) were basically the same as a twenty-something girl in any city. Yes there were a few cultural difficulties, but it just so happened that Hannah was surrounded by Irish, Australians and Americans more so than other British people (besides her boss and potential boyfriends).
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a light read, but verged on the side of being a little too fluffy for my taste. So if you like Classic Chick Lit, Gorman is your go-to gal.
Ohhhhh I’d have been fuming. LOL!!! Usually if I start a series and 3/4 way through I am addicted, I order the next book so it’s there waiting and ready…so I’d have been fuming. LOL!
I might pick it up. I like the occasional total full fledged chick lit…mindless entertainment and an easy read…LOL!!

Well-written review, although certainly not my type of book but regardless, I would have been quite unhappy to turn to a blank page or the back cover. Think you were more than fair.
